  • Today observed as International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers across the world. Theme of International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2015 was “Together for Peace”.


  • Today 1st Hindi newspaper Udant Martand (The Rising Sun) was published from Calcutta, India in the year 1826.


  • Veena Jain was appointed as Director General (news) in Doordarshan. She succeeded Akshay Rout. She was appointed at this post after her appointment was approved by the Union Ministry of information and broadcasting. Along with this appointment Jain will also hold the charge as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) and will oversee the ministry’s new media wing and social media cell and report to the ministry for all purposes.


  • IRCTC announced fares for First Class and AC classes in passenger trains besides freight charges will go up by 0.5 per cent from 1st June 2015 as new service tax will come into effect. Currently, 3.7 per cent service tax is levied on train fares for AC Class, First Class and freight. This will go up to 4.2 per cent from June.


  • President Pranab Mukherjee is on 5-day visit to Sweden and  Belarus where he will meet the King Carl Gustaf, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and Speaker of the Swedish Parliament. Themes of the Visit : Innovations and sustainable development with a focus on Urban Development , Science and Research and emphasis on life science.


  • State Bank of India has launched an online application Customer Acquisition Solution (OCAS) that will enable customers to apply for home, car, education and personal loans online. The bank is also planning to launch a similar application on the mobile platform soon. the bank officials will contact customers and complete all the loan formalities. The application will also help customers to upload all necessary documents online, thus empowering the customer and also reducing the loan processing time.


  • Maharashtra Government has launched ‘Swachhata Saptapadi’ scheme by the municipal councils and corporations from the 14th Finance Commission will be linked with the successful implementation of the scheme. The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with actor Aamir Khan who is brand ambassador of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Mumbai. Saptapadi means vows taken during marriage by bride and groom in Maharashtra. The seven points of this scheme include

  1. A promise of participation of people in the Swachh Maharashtra campaign.

  2. Adaptation of scientific method for waste disposal.

  3. Construction of 100 per cent toilets in every corporation wards.

  4. Creation of awareness about segregation of dry and wet waste.

  5. Mobilization of public participation.

  6. Take initiative for promoting greenery and open spaces.


  • Book titled “Ahmedabad: A City in the World” authored by Amrita Shah was released. This book is like a biography of Ahmedabad City and also covers its complicity in communal violence includes story of roadmaps and rivers, kings and kingmakers, merchants and savants; of Dalit labourers and women bootleggers, displaced Muslims and a euphoric middle class. Amrita Shah who was a founding editor of Elle India.


  • United States has removed Cuba from its list of State Sponsor of Terrorism, paving the way for normalizing ties frozen for half a century and lifting of additional sanctions against the communist country.


  • Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley inaugurated New Bank Note Paper Line unit of 6000 metric tonne capacity at Security Paper Mill in Hoshangabad (Madhya Pradesh). With this inauguration India will become self reliant in production of big denominations Bank Note paper. He also flagged off the first consignment of one thousand rupee bank notes made indigenously from this paper mill to the Currency Note Press Nasik. This plant belongs to Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL), a Miniratna Category-I CPSE, which is a wholly owned by Union Government. By commissioning this plant, India will become self-reliant in producing Bank Note Paper for higher denominations.


  • Union cabinet today gave its approval to the re-promulgation of the controversial Land Acquisition Ordinance.


  • All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) has called for a nation-wide strike on June 24 in support of various demands of the State Sector Bank Employees Association (SSBEA).


  • Government today approved a pact on coastal shipping between India and Bangladesh to facilitate faster and cheaper cargo movement between both the nations so that freight charges will come down and improve utilization of port capabilities and decongestion of roads especially at the land custom stations/integrated check posts.


  • A case was lodged in Barabanki court in Uttar Pradesh against Nestle India over inadequate safety standards of its product Maggi after taking the consideration as found that packets of instant noodles of 2014 batch contained high lead concentration of 17.2 parts per million (ppm) which is nearly seven times more that the permissible limit of 0.01 ppm to 2.5 ppm. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration (UPFDA) had asked Nestle India to withdraw a batch of Maggi noodles from the market after they had found that it contained high level of lead and Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a taste enhancer.


  • Joseph Sepp Blatter, FIFA President was re-elected as President post by 133 votes out of 206 valid votes. This will be his fifth term. 65th FIFA Congress held in Zurich chose him for this post. He defeated Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan as Prince was able to bag 73 votes.


  • Jai Ho, a documentary directed by Umesh Aggarwal and based on music maestro AR Rahman’s life, was screened at the White House in Washington.
